Titus 1

Salutation

1 Paul, ^aa bond-servant of God and an ^bapostle of Jesus Christ, ^{▼▼Or according to}for the faith of those ^dchosen of God and ^ethe knowledge of the truth which is ^faccording to godliness, 2 in ^gthe hope of eternal life, which God, ^hwho cannot lie, ⁱpromised ^{▼▼Lit before eternal times
,} ^klong ages ago, 3 but ^lat the proper time revealed His word in ^mthe proclamation ⁿwith which I was entrusted ^oaccording to the commandment of ^pGod our Savior;

4 To ^qTitus, ^rmy true ^{▼▼Or child}son ^{▼▼Lit according to}in a ^ucommon faith: ^vGrace and peace from God the Father and ^wChrist Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in ^xCrete, that you would set in order what remains and ^yappoint ^zelders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, ^aaif any man is beyond reproach, the ^abhusband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of ^acindecent behavior or ^adrebellion. 7 For the ^{▼▼Or bishop
,} ^afoverseer must be beyond reproach as ^agGod’s steward, not ^ahself-willed, not quick-tempered, not ^aioverindulging in wine, not ^{▼▼Or combative}a bully, ^aknot greedy for money, 8 but ^alhospitable, ^amloving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, 9 ^anholding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to ^{▼▼Or encourage}exhort in ^apsound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.

10 ^aqFor there are many ^arrebellious people, ^asempty talkers and deceivers, especially ^atthose of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting ^auwhole families, teaching ^avthings they should not teach ^awfor the sake of ^{▼▼Or disgraceful}dishonest gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “ ^ayCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason ^azreprimand them ^baseverely so that they may be ^bbsound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish ^bcmyths and ^bdcommandments of men who ^beturn away from the truth. 15 ^bfTo the pure, all things are pure; but ^bgto those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their ^bhmind and their conscience are defiled. 16 ^biThey profess to know God, but by their deeds they ^bjdeny Him, being ^bkdetestable and ^bldisobedient and ^bmworthless ^bnfor any good deed.
